Background:
Established in 1986, the New Hampshire Family Support Conference Planning Committee was formed for the purpose of planning an annual New Hampshire Family Support Conference. The first conference was a one-day conference held in 1987 and attended by approximately 75 persons. Subsequently, the conference has grown to become a weekend conference now attended by over 700 persons. The New Hampshire Family Support Conference offers parents/family members/caregivers the opportunity to learn current information on a variety of topics, as well as providing an important forum to meet others sharing the same journey.
Mission Statement:
The New Hampshire Family Support Conference Planning Committee’s mission is to plan and organize an annual conference. This conference focuses on accomplishments as well as challenges associated with inclusion and transitions throughout the life span of an individual with a developmental disability. The topics can include educational advocacy, behavior, communication, employment, circles of supports, friendships, siblings, recreation, personal future planning, benefits, housing.
The New Hampshire Family Support Conference Planning Committee is made up of mostly parents/family members/caregivers with staff support from the Bureau of Developmental Services. The Planning Committee members meet several times throughout the year and are responsible for organizing the details of the annual conference including: choosing the conference location/theme/color, Keynote Speaker(s), workshop presentations, fundraising items, conference agenda, etc. Having a majority of parents/family members/caregivers on the Planning Committee ensures that the annual New Hampshire Family Support Conference is planned by New Hampshire families for families!
